I really don’t understand how movies like Butter get made. I mean there’s nothing wrong with it particularly, but I wonder who leapt at the pitch that must have gone along the lines of: “power, revenge, redemption and butter-carving. In Iowa.”
There’s a sweet subplot about a black kid who’s adopted by a pair of well-meaning grownups, Jennifer Garner is brittle and ferocious and Michelle-Bachmann-Batshit-Crazy, Ashley Greene is a hot lesbian and Olivia Wilde stomps around the set gleefully as a demanding hooker. There’s even a Hugh Jackman cameo where he keeps his shirt on. So lots of nice bits. But nothing that resolves the big question: why? Don’t ask me, I have no clue. It filmed in Louisiana.
