Rose likes her Sims. In fact I’m buying her a new pc for her birthday, mostly so she can play Sims3 (homework? pah!) So when I told her about the premise for Gamer – video games where you control real people – she pronounced that would be cool. And the concept is indeed radical and thought-provoking. Sadly, though, the movie isn’t – quite. Because while it makes a really interesting commentary on society and morality, the ensuing debate seems to sit entirely separate from the actual content and story of the film. That is pure blow-hard – all big tits and bigger guns and empty dialogue: and maybe that was the point? I don’t know. It’s just a disappointment when there are such grand themes at play that Kyra Sedgwick is wasted, and even Gerard Butler is pumped but dull.
Although set in futuristic New York, it shot cityscapes in and around downtown Albuquerque New Mexico – no doubt benefitting from their tax incentive programme. In return for this largesse, the production hired 182 New Mexico crew members, and countless extras.
