I nearly skipped straight past the new Octavia Spencer / Taraji P Henson movie Hidden Figures, based on my simple gut response to the YouTube screengrab. That image, of three black gals laughing, made the movie look like a 60’s-themed rom-com, something that just really doesn’t interest me.

How badly can one be misled by a simple image? And how vast and important is every single element of the movie’s marketing? This much. Because Hidden Figures is the untold true story of the black women maths geniuses who helped get NASA into space. Seriously. Three ladies laughing does not begin to do this story justice. Maybe I’m just not the target audience.
