Since late August, scary-looking clowns have begun appearing all over America, lurking in woods, appearing on dark roadsides or driving in cars, grinning horribly, some brandishing knives. They’ve been seen in states from California to Minnesota to Tennesse, and from Pennsylvania to South Carolina, New Jersey and New York.

Online conspiracy theorists have already linked these sightings to the 30th anniversary remake of the Stephen King “It” movie, claiming it’s all part of a cunning and freaky viral marketing campaign. Producers though have denied that the sightings have anything to do with the movie’s marketing, saying: “New Line is absolutely not involved in the rash of clown sightings.”

But clever if they were, no?
