If No Escape – the new “white folks in peril” movie starring Owen Wilson – did anything interesting in its transmedia, I haven’t been able to find it. Which is a shame. Because when a movie is crafted with such obvious racist undertones (“othering” the nameless, faceless, angry people of colour, because only white people want to protect their children in times of danger, right?) there needs to be an explanation. But I also wonder what a storyteller is to do? I mean, movies need bad guys, and good guys, and authenticity – so how might such a horror story be told without offending vast swathes of the planet? Interestingly, they did pre-screenings in the Philippines. No word on how that went down.
