slow-west 2

I haven’t posted about a movie I’ve watched in a while, but Slow West was so roundly boo-ed by the critics and I so thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated it, that I thought it worth a mention. With New Zealand playing stand-in for Colorado, a naive young Scotsman travels across country to find his lost love, unaware that there are also bounty hunters on the girl’s trail – and that he may just be leading them all right to her. In spite of the plot, it’s not really very shoot-em-up, but rather a dazzling, detailed, tactile and enigmatic portrayal of the brutality and desperation of the Wild West – all played out to a whimsical Moonrise Kingdom-y soundtrack. I loved it.
