Not sure if I’ve mentioned this before but my Father, before he retired, was the Headmaster of a boarding school in rural England. My Mom was an Art Teacher. My brother followed in my Dad’s footsteps and is now a house master at a school in leafy north London. His wife, my beloved, dotty sister-in-law is also a teacher, as are her own sister and her sister’s husband in Australia. And even my own darling twin sis worked at some plummy girls school, also in Blighty, for a couple of years. So I’m fairly steeped in the traditions – and the queasy spooky bits – of the English private education system. So whilst The Awakening looks like it might be derivative of a bunch of other things – El Orfanato and The Others spring quickly to mind – I’ll still go see it.
