The Grand Budapest Hotel presents a gorgeous stylised universe of artifice and sumptuous art design that’s populated with clownish personalities who do perplexing, cartoonish things in the name of love, or greed, or whatever.
But please don’t for a minute think that that’s a criticism. The Grand Budapest Hotel is absolutely delightful, a cinematic experience without par this year. Ralph Fiennes is completely superb as the sleazy hotelier who’s proved, ultimately, to have a moral backbone. Grand Budapest filmed in Saxony. Loved it.
