In 2006, heavy storms and flooding had turned an small patch of high ground in the Netherlands into a barren, muddy island. Whipped by icy wind and freezing rain, 200 horses were trapped. 19 died of exposure. Following a call for brave riders with fearless steeds, eight women rode through the floodwaters, and lead the herd to safety. Dutch news report here:
