KiWIMA (KiSwahili WIMA – Swahili Vertical) is the African-language streaming platform sharing original vertical content to 120 million-strong, Swahili-speaking audience.

Africa is entering what has been widely described as “the African Century”. Its population will reach 2.5 billion by 2050, making one in four people globally African. It is the world’s youngest region, with a median age of 19 (compared to 39 in China and 44 in Europe). 6/10 of the world’s fastest growing economies are African, and by 2034 Africa will have a larger working-age population than India or China. This demographic structure underpins a rare long-term opportunity for business growth: a continuously expanding youthful consumer market with rising purchasing power that’s already mobile-native. Over the past fifteen years, I have been looking at how these demographic opportunities could unlock value in the African film, television, and digital media sectors. Recently, a convergence of factors – low production costs, universal mobile usage, and rapid adoption of streaming and social platforms – offer an unprecedented but time-sensitive opportunity.

The real tipping point is explosive growth of Vertical, mobile-native Content. Vertical content is entertainment media filmed for consumption on mobile phones.
This format is already proven at scale in Asia and India. In China, over 350 million people consume vertical content daily in a market worth $9 billion annually. In India, 21 million new users registered to watch vertical content in a single month, in a market already worth $5 billion. The Hollywood Reporter has even called vertical content the New Goldrush.
In Africa – even with its large population and economic growth – this opportunity remains largely unrecognised, and certainly untapped.
I designed KiWIMA as a dynamic response to the opportunities in the new era of vertical content production and consumption, fine-tuned to the African market.
- Streaming platform — Swahili content in vertical formats, designed for viewing on mobile phones.
- Production plant — producing entertainment content that East African audiences want to see: short 2–3 minute dramas, thrillers, comedies, horror, soap operas – all in Swahili.
- A co-creation engine — providing multiple opportunities for audiences to become participants in the creative process in ways that build shared passion and commitment.
- Community — membership of different tiers for different levels of fans, unlocking unique opportunities, connections and experiences.
- A social platform — for content creators working in Swahili to share and monetize their work.
KiWIMA is thus not just a content platform, it’s a systemised production factory to produce and own the content, and it’s a cocreation engine to lock in engagement and shape the content production. Together these pillars ensure a constant flywheel of members, member retention and acquisition, income streams and new content production.
KiWIMA’s most unique differentiator is a language-led strategy that treats major African languages as individual, scalable business units. This specifically breaks with the “everyman” approach of current streaming competitors, allowing us to dig down into truly locally relevant content.
The platform launches in Swahili, with 130 million speakers, around 75% of whom are under 35, and who have 99% mobile reach in urban areas. A target of 2 million members at $36 a year gives revenue of $72 million per annum anda (x6) valuation of $432 million.
The same targeted language model will then be expanded into Hausa-Fulani, Amharic, Yoruba, Maghrebi Arabic, and Egyptian Arabic. Together these languages address a combined 560m+ total addressable market.
Even at modest penetration, these markets support substantial long-term value creation; a 10 million audience and $400 million turnover, and $2.4 billion valuation is an achievable target.

Beyond membership fees, KiWIMA operates a hybrid revenue model that also offers advertising, branded content, NGO and development productions, events, merchandising, and content licensing. KiSS is structured as a Mauritius GBC and is led by a highly experienced, African-led team with deep regional media and technology expertise.
Africa’s media market clearly presents unprecedented opportunity and KiSS TV specifically offers Category leader potential with scale advantage for first movers. If you’d like to know more, please get in touch at martin@martincuff.com
