During World War II, rumours reached the Vatican of strange and unsettling phenomena in Axis-occupied Bosnia. Omens in the night sky, an ancient shrine to the Demon God Proteus unearthed, emergency and multiplication of hideous creatures, stultifying drought, the vanishing of an entire village and the presence of a cave system long believed to mark the gateway to hell spark fears that demons have escaped their bounds and have infested the area. Rome sends two Jesuit priests to investigate, accompanied by an experienced Italian soldier with demons of his own – but what they find is even more terrifying than the men could ever have imagined.
