In 1805, renowned Scottish explorer Mungo Park embarks on his second expedition to chart the course of the Niger River.

But as his carefully laid plans collapse in the face of disease, wild animals, human violence, and the horrors of slave trade, Park’s unshakable belief in his civilising mission begins to unravel.

And then, deep in the interior, where Vodun ceremonies connect with deeper truths, Park comes to understand that there is in fact a fate worse than death.
